Departure is a globe crossing road movie, following the lonely struggle of an Iraqi refugee, Sadiq. Leaving behind the hell of Saddam Hussain’s Iraq, he finds himself in more torment as he traverses country to country – passed on from one smuggler to the next.
Hoping to join his estranged wife in London, Sadiq finds himself suffering nightmares – as he recalls how he was forced to change his occupation from wedding cameraman, to filming the violence and executions perpetrated by the regime. Sadiq does find some solace, in the letters of his soldier son, who has been lost in action, whilst fighting in the Iraq-Iran conflict.
Having believed he had escaped from the omnipresence of his country’s ruthless dictator, Sadiq soon discovers that ‘Saddam’s assassin’ – though in another guise – is still on his trail.
Will Sadiq get to his destination? Has he really escaped Saddam’s reach? And was leaving behind his homeland worth his struggle? Sadiq’s departure continues.
